Dr Morunga & The Hair Clinic

“Here’s your … why”

Dr. Mark Morunga, the credentialled Medical Director of The Hair Clinic located at 10 St Marks Road, Remuera, Auckland, brings over three decades of medical expertise to the forefront of hair restoration. Graduating from Auckland University with degrees in Bachelor of Human Biology (BHB) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1993, Dr. Morunga further honed his skills by completing a Diploma in Paediatrics in 1997 and a Diploma in Community Emergency Medicine in 2000. His commitment to continuous learning led him to achieve Fellowship with the Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care Physicians in 2001.

Dr. Morunga’s passion for cosmetic medicine emerged in 2006, culminating in his attainment of a Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine and membership with the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCM) in 2011. This unique blend of urgent care and cosmetic medicine expertise positions him as a leading authority in non-surgical aesthetic treatments, particularly in the realm of hair restoration.

At The Hair Clinic, Dr. Morunga specializes in Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, a revolutionary treatment that leverages the body’s natural healing processes to stimulate hair growth. PRP involves extracting a small sample of the patient’s blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then re-injecting this enriched plasma into the scalp. The growth factors released by the platelets enhance blood flow to hair follicles, encouraging the regeneration of healthy hair. This approach is particularly effective for individuals experiencing various stages of hair loss, including patchy or patterned alopecia, as well as hair thinning due to genetic or hormonal factors.

Understanding that each patient’s hair loss journey is unique, Dr. Morunga adopts a personalized approach to treatment. He meticulously evaluates factors such as lifestyle, health status, hormonal balance, and genetic predisposition before crafting a tailored hair regrowth plan. This comprehensive strategy may incorporate PRP therapy alongside other innovative treatments offered at The Hair Clinic, such as PDO hair stimulation threads, mesotherapy with PepFactor, and Regenera Activa micrograft technology. By combining these modalities within a holistic care framework, Dr. Morunga aims to maximize hair growth potential and deliver optimal outcomes for his patients.

Prospective patients seeking a natural, effective solution for hair loss will find in Dr. Morunga a compassionate and skilled practitioner dedicated to restoring not only hair but also confidence and well-being. His extensive medical background, coupled with a commitment to adopting the latest advancements in hair restoration, ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care. To embark on a personalized hair regrowth journey under Dr. Morunga’s expert guidance, individuals are encouraged to take the first step by completing the online hair growth consultation available on The Hair Clinic’s website.

“The measure of a clinics integrity, honesty and clinical acumen is not measured by their successes, but are more accurately measured by how they respond to those treatments where the outcomes have been less than desired” Dr Mark Morunga

Below is a response written by myself in one such situation.

“You can be assured that we will do everything possible to get the best possible outcome for you …. our patient”

“While I am unable to discuss individual cases due to confidentiality reasons, I would like to take this opportunity to outline our general process and procedures at The Hair Clinic.
When patients, both male and female, first engage with us, they typically find us through various mediums and fill out an online consultation form. This form collects essential information about the patient's personal & family hair loss history, medical history, medications, and for women, any hormonal components linked to hair loss such as postpartum, postmenopausal, or hair loss associated with PCOS. The aim of this history is to determine the cause of hair loss. Generally, the history provides the clues required to form a diagnosis, confirmed upon examination when the patient books an appointment with the clinic.

If a patient does not complete an online consultation, then a formal consultation takes place in the rooms. Once the underlying cause of hair loss is postulated or determined, we discuss evidence-based and efficacious treatments that may benefit the patient. These treatments can range from pharmaceuticals like minoxidil, finasteride, or spironolactone to more advanced treatments such as PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy or Exosome mesotherapy depending on the patient's current situation & the degree of hair loss.

Unfortunately, female treatment options are limited & much less than that for men, there is very little maneuverability, as a consequence there are very few clinics if any willing to help women improve their hair status, that's why we've decided to act & provide the best evidenced based Hair Growth strategies available in NZ for women.

Transparency exists for the success and failure rates of all treatments, we clearly state that the success rate of PRP therapy is between 65% and 70% in terms of a positive treatment outcome, consistent with international data. (ALL hair treatments have a success and failure rates, its important that you are given the facts and not the sales pitch). These success and failure rates are provided as a response to all online enquiries, is reiterated during the consultation process, and is also on the consent form that is signed. Potentially 3 points of contact regarding PRP outcomes. The choice of treatment always rests with the patient, this is called informed consent.

With over 10 years of experience in PRP hair treatments we have found that success is often determined by an increasing volume of PRP & a higher number of treatments, typically seeing success after the third treatment. Therefore, we prepare patients for this, in addition we take photos before each treatment and schedule a doctor review midway through the treatment program for assessment..
For women, particularly if hormonal drivers are involved in hair loss, we may partner with specialists such as gynecologists and endocrinologists to aid in managing these issues.
Generally speaking, given PRP is nature's own growth & repair stimulant, any worsening or thinning of hair is likely attributable to a worsening of the underlying cause.

I have included a link to a gallery of our patients, who are real people with good treatment outcomes.https://www.thehairclinic.co.nz/hair-journey-before-afters.

We are completely transparent with our costs and are happy for patients to review other clinic services, with larger volumes of PRP we have one of the lowest price points in NZ.

This is a conscious decision made to put patient needs first and improve patient outcomes.

In summary Hair Regrowth can be a long journey, all treatments have a success and failure rates. Specifically with PRP we have found after 10 years of experience that larger volumes and multiple treatment contacts improve potential patient outcomes, however failure rates still exist. We have driven our larger volumes of PRP down to one of the lowest costs in NZ to make this affordable for patients. All patients are informed of success and failure rate, this is a legal, ethical and moral obligation. This has been my practice for over 30 years as an Urgent Care and Aesthetic Physician”

Kindest regards Dr Mark
